Horse Drawn Boats in Ashton Under Lyne
Horse Drawn Enterprises was established in 1977 to provide services with horses, working in harness, teamed up with Sue Day. The small business keeps alive the traditions and skills of horses at work in partnership with people. Over the years, a wide variety of work has been undertaken, specialising today in three main areas:
- 1. Horse-drawn vehicles, especially carriages for special occasions like weddings.
- 2. Horse-drawn boats on canals, for passenger trips or to gain experience as crew.
- 3. Living history work with period vehicles, historic boats, pack-horses, and horses in different time periods such as jousting horses in the medieval period.
Other work undertaken includes:
- Agricultural work - eg harrowing, haymaking, ploughing
- Forestry work - extracting logs out of woods and forests
- Guided walks following a pack-horse over tracks and trails
- Horse-drawn caravan day outings and short holidays
- Outdoor theatre and film work with horses performing in various working roles
The majority of work occurs within a 30mile radius of Manchester but it is not totally exclusive to this area. It is important to note that whereas vehicles can be transported on trailers to an area of work, that this is not possible with boats. For boat use, people must travel to the location of the boat, which varies as journeys are made.
The horses, vehicles, and boats are not available for hire without Sue Day and her staff. For example we do not hire out horses to pull horse-drawn caravans without us.
